January 23, 2025 – Nakuru, Kenya
The Centre for Enhancing Democracy and Good Governance (CEDGG), led by its CEO Mr. Paul Masese and flanked by its secretariat team, participated in a press conference convened by the Nakuru County Civil Society Organizations Forum (NACCSOF). The forum addressed alarming cases of human rights violations and environmental crises affecting Nakuru County and Kenya at large.
The press briefing highlighted systemic issues, including enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and environmental degradation, which continue to undermine public trust in law enforcement and governance institutions.
Raising Concerns Over Human Rights Violations
The forum drew attention to the disappearance of Brian Odhiambo, who was reportedly taken into custody by Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers on January 18, 2025, from his home in Manyani Estate, Nakuru. His whereabouts remain unknown, leaving his family and friends traumatized and demanding answers. Additionally, the brutal murder of human rights activist Richard Otieno, also known as the “Molo President,” further underscored the gravity of the situation.
Speaking at the event, NACCSOF members described these incidents as a disturbing return to practices reminiscent of the oppressive Nyayo era.
Public Frustration and the Risk of Anarchy
The press conference also highlighted recent unrest, such as the violent clashes in Suswa following the killing of livestock. The incident saw citizens resisting state agencies, reflecting growing frustration with governance and law enforcement failures. NACCSOF warned that such tensions could escalate further, especially with the 2027 general elections approaching, potentially replicating the devastating 2007-2008 post-election violence.
Key Demands by NACCSOF
NACCSOF outlined several urgent demands to address the crisis:
- The immediate production of Brian Odhiambo by KWS and his lawful prosecution if warranted.
- Independent investigations into allegations of torture, abductions, and unresolved disappearances, including Richard Otieno’s murder.
- Strengthening enforcement against the sale of unsafe fish from Lake Nakuru, with strict measures to curb corruption.
- Adoption of human rights-based approaches in governance, ensuring due process and accountability in law enforcement.
- Facilitation of dialogue between KWS, elected leaders, elders, and community representatives to resolve conflicts around Lake Nakuru.
CEDGG’s Role in the Fight for Justice
In the address, CEDGG CEO Mr. Paul Masese reaffirmed the organization’s unwavering commitment to upholding justice and good governance. Mr. Masese emphasized the importance of preventing a return to the authoritarian practices of the past, stating “we must safeguard our nation from regressing to a period of repression and ensure a future characterized by justice and freedom for all Kenyans”
A Call for Action and Unity
NACCSOF concluded by urging the government to prioritize constitutional measures to restore citizen trust and protect human rights. They also called on the international community to monitor the situation and support efforts to uphold the rule of law.
As Nakuru faces critical challenges, the civil society forum remains steadfast in its mission to ensure justice, accountability, and the preservation of Kenya’s democratic ideals.
